Nowadays, internet exists everywhere. We always see a lot of students use smartphones on metro, at school or on road. When you glance at their screens, it’s not surprised to find that most of them are visiting social media sites to kill time. Based on the research, Facebook, Messenger, WhatsApp, YouTube and WeChat are the five most popular social media in the world. It is no wonder that the more time students spend on social media, the poorer performance they will receive at school.

There are five main reasons listed below which explain how social media affect students’ study:
- Social media can cause distraction from learning
These days, it’s very common for students to use a cell phone or a laptop to take notes in class. Thus, students can easily be distracted from the class and often miss some key points from the lecture. Consequently, it may affect their learning from the class and also exam results at the end. Therefore, it may be a good idea for a school to block the social media platform during class time.

- Social media can affect social and communication skills
In this generation, students tend to use social media to communicate with others rather than having face-to-face communication. This situation may lead students to avoid interacting with others. If a student is lack of interpersonal skill, he might have a problem to co-operate with others to complete a great teamwork project at school. The lack of social and communication skills will definitely affect students’ school learning and performance.

- Social media can affect writing skill
For students born in generation Z, they may not have a good writing skill since they often write posts on social media instead of writing regular mails. When creating a post on Snapchat or Facebook, they tend to ignore the importance of spelling, grammar and punctuation. Therefore, it is very easy to find a lot of grammar mistakes from students’ academic essays.

- Social media can lead a poor time management
Many students find that it is difficult for them to live without social media since social media are playing an important role in their lives. In our society, a lot of teenagers link to social media every moment without a break. They waste a lot of time chatting with friends, watching unimportant videos and creating some weird posts on social media. As a result, they don’t have enough time to focus on school study and to complete homework on time.

- Social media can interrupt daily routine
A lot of students use smartphones, computers and tablets to visit social media platforms for a long period of time since social media become a way to relax. For example, some teenagers may visit Facebook page at midnight and go to sleep late. Thus, in the morning, they don’t have enough energy to go to school and concentrate on school study. Consequently, social media can interrupt daily routine if students can’t use it in an adequate manner.
In conclusion, it is very important for students to use social media in an adequate manner. That is, using social media for a limited period of time and in a proper place. As a result, students can avoid negative effects from using social media and have a good study and performance at school.
